How the fees work
How eBay works out its fee
In the US the final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale: the item price, the shipping the buyer pays and the sales tax. Most categories are 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% above that. Some categories differ, like books at 15.3%, trading cards at 13.25% and athletic shoes at 8% from $150. Most orders also pay $0.30, or $0.40 when the order is over $10.
UK, Australia and Germany
UK private sellers pay no final value fee and no regulatory fee on sales in the UK. UK business sellers pay a category rate (9.9% to 12.9% in most categories), a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and 30p or 40p per order (10p up to £10 in Home, Furniture & DIY and some Collectables), and eBay adds 20% VAT to those fees. In Australia, sellers with AU$25,000 or less in sales over 12 months sell free; above that, Pro Starter charges 13.4% up to $4,000 plus $0.30 an order. Private sellers in Germany pay nothing on sales within Germany.
Promoted listings
The general ad rate is charged on the same total as the final value fee, and only when the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad. A 5% ad rate on a $60 sale costs $3.00.
What this calculator leaves out
It prices one item sold to a buyer in your own country, for a seller without an eBay Store who is Above Standard. International sales, Store subscriptions, listing fees beyond your free monthly allowance, vehicles and the extra fee for Below Standard sellers change the numbers.
